Some Thoughts on Making a Will

There are many reasons why every adult should have a valid and carefully planned will, yet studies show that six out of ten Americans die without one. When you die without a will, the state in which you reside distributes your assets. Although written to be as fair as possible, state laws cannot draw a "will" to suit every individual's wishes.

Your will is probably the most important document you will ever sign. A will allows you to properly dispose of the property accumulated during your lifetime. A will also allows you to dispose of this property to the people and institutions you think are important. Furthermore, a will allows you to perpetuate your life for the good of your family and institutions you care about.

In the Christian context of life, creating a will really means that you understand all your possessions are gifts from God. You should also recognize that a will enables you to share what God has given you with others. Making a will shows responsible stewardship of God's gifts to you.

Charitable Gifts

If you desire to live on in the prayers and works of the Capuchin priests and brothers, here are a few ideas to consider.

If you choose to include the Capuchins of the Province of Saint Augustine in your will, you may do so very simply stating, "I leave the Province of St. Augustine of the Capuchin Order the sum of $(amount) or (percentage)% of the assets of my estate for the life and work of said Province."

You may also choose to designate a specific use for your bequest. The following are some of the areas your bequest may support:

Masses offered for you and/or your loved ones
The Formation and Education of Capuchin friars
The health care and retirement needs of Capuchin friars
The missionary work of the Capuchins
  The friars' greatest need

Sample wording to support a specific project is as follows: "I leave to the Province of St. Augustine of the Capuchin Order (dollar amount or percentage) of my estate for the formation and education of priests and brothers."

One Final Note

If you choose to include the Capuchin Friars in your will, you may wish to notify us of your intentions. Those who make provisions in their will for the Capuchin Friars become members of our Heritage Club. We include members of the Heritage Club in our daily prayers, visit members at their homes, and invite them to special events. You do not have to reveal the details of your bequest and no list is ever published. We like to know of your intentions so we can show our appreciation for your generosity. Thank you.
